About Prof. Dr Jürgen Rockstroh
Jürgen Rockstroh is Professor of Medicine and Head of the HIV Outpatient Clinic at the University of Bonn in Germany. Clinical care, research and medical publishing all feature in his work, particularly in HIV and viral hepatitis. He also chairs the guidelines programme of the European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS). [1, 2]
FreeBooks4Doctors readers may know his name from HIV 2015/2016, the textbook he edited with Dr Christian Hoffmann. That book appears in the site’s directory of free medical resources. [3, 4]

Medical education and clinical background
Rockstroh earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University of Bonn, where he also completed his residency in the Department of Medicine. His clinical career includes caring for people living with HIV and researching the course of HIV in people with haemophilia. [5]
Another focus is viral hepatitis in people who also have HIV. His research addresses hepatitis coinfection and antiretroviral therapy, including the development of new medicines. [5, 6]
Areas of expertise
His published clinical and research work covers:
- HIV medicine and antiretroviral treatment.
- HIV and viral hepatitis coinfection.
- HIV in people with haemophilia.
- Clinical trials of antiviral treatments.
- HIV testing and the application of research to clinical care. [1, 5, 6]
These subjects provide a guide to his professional background and the areas represented in his publications.
Research and selected publications
Rockstroh has been an investigator in clinical trials involving HIV medicines and treatments for hepatitis coinfection. Alongside original research, he has contributed to clinical guidelines and medical textbooks. [5]
EXPEDITION-2 study (2018). He was first author of this paper in Clinical Infectious Diseases, examining glecaprevir/pibrentasvir in people with hepatitis C and HIV-1. It offers a specific example of his research into hepatitis treatment in people with both infections. [7]
EACS guidelines revision, version 13.0. Rockstroh co-authored the paper describing the 2025 revision of the EACS guidelines. It appeared online on 15 October 2025, ahead of the January 2026 print issue of HIV Medicine. The update addresses HIV care, associated infections and other health conditions. [8]
HIV 2015/2016. Together with Christian Hoffmann, he co-edited this textbook for clinicians working in HIV care. The editors made it freely available online, explaining in their preface that medical knowledge should be accessible to those treating and caring for people affected by HIV. [4]
The textbook records an earlier period of HIV medicine. Readers looking for treatment recommendations should use current guidance.
Professional leadership and guideline work
His previous leadership appointments include:
- Chair of the German Clinical AIDS Working Group (KAAD), 1998–2007.
- President of the German AIDS Society, 2007–2011.
- Member of the International AIDS Society Governing Council, 2011–2020.
- President of the European AIDS Clinical Society, 2019–2020. [1]
EuroTEST’s biography records his service as chair of its Steering Committee since 2015. [1]
EACS currently lists Rockstroh as Guidelines Chair. Its Medical Secretariat coordinates updates using recommendations from clinical panels covering treatment, infections, other health conditions and prescribing issues. This is a distinct role from his earlier term as EACS president. [2]
Recognition and community involvement
Germany awarded Rockstroh the Federal Cross of Merit in 2017 for his work in HIV and AIDS. In its announcement, Aidshilfe Köln described his research and treatment contributions and identified him as a board member at the time. [9]
His association with the organisation is another part of his documented professional history, alongside his clinical and academic work.
